Post image for Lupe Fiasco Told By Atlantic Records “Dont Rap Too Deep” on Lasers

Lupe Fiasco struggled to release his upcoming third album on Atlantic Records. It took over three years and picketing from fans before Lupe followed up his gold-selling The Cool. Despite platinum singles, gold plaques and Grammy Awards, the Chicago native said his budget was cut and he was stiffled creatively.

“I was specifically told” — Fiasco chuckled — “‘Don’t rap too deep on this record.’” He laughed some more, telling the Chicago Sun-Times. “That was a specific order from the top. ‘You’re rapping too fast or too slow, or it’s too complex.’ … There are consequences and combat that comes from that process and the eventual compromise. With me, though, I’m not writing about someone else. I’m writing about me. This is my life. It’s very personal for me. So for somebody to kind of put their fingers in that and play with that, it becomes more damaging.”

Post image for Lupe Fiasco – Lasers Review

Lupe Fiasco says he hates the way Lasers was made.

And it shows.

Around five or six songs through the album, it becomes apparent that Atlantic Records has its fingerprints all over the record, creating a electropoppy motif that is an awkward and uncomfortable fit at best – and outright terrible at worst. “Out of My Head”, “Break The Chain”, and “I Don’t Wanna Care Right Now” – in particular – stand out for this reason; they all sound like they belong on, say, a Black Eyed Peas or Drake album, rather than with a conscious lyricist like Lupe.  This is perhaps the inherent irony of the record overall – even as Matthew Mahaffey sings about “number one songs spinnin’ all day long” on “State Run Radio”, he ends up [unwittingly? intentionally?] describing the sound of Lasers as a whole.

Post image for HyperSolar magnifying film will increase solar panel efficiency by up to 300%

As the U.S. government continues to heap billions in subsidies to the world’s wealthiest coal and oil companies, the solar industry has been struggling to make it in the States. This is sad for many reasons, not the least of which is that we’re missing out on one of the biggest growth industries in the world.

Fortunately HyperSolar, a new U.S. company, offers a bright ray of sunny hope on the clean energy frontier.

If we have the political will to overcome the stranglehold of the fossil fuel industry on our nation’s energy policy, we could become 100 percent renewably powered in a 2030-2050 time frame.
